A4 Reference Pitch: What Changes at 440, 442, or 432 Hz?

By the Tuneara team · Prepared

A reference pitch sets the frequency of a named note, commonly A4. Changing that reference shifts all calculated targets by the same frequency ratio.

What changing the A4 reference pitch does

A4 = 440 Hz is a common standard, while ensembles and historical contexts may use another agreed reference. The number alone does not specify temperament: equal temperament and other interval systems can start from the same A4. Agree on both the practical target and the musical context before tuning together.

Calculate the shifts from 440 Hz to 442 or 432 Hz

At A4 = 442 Hz, A3 is 221 Hz and A2 is 110.5 Hz. Every 440-based equal-tempered target multiplies by 442/440, a shift of about 7.85 cents. At 432 Hz, the shift from 440 is about minus 31.77 cents. These are ratio calculations, not fixed additions to every note.

Try it in practice

Calculate A3 and A2 from one chosen reference by halving twice. Compare those results with a standard target chart. If your tuner offers A4 calibration, set it to the ensemble’s chosen reference. Otherwise, use a reference source that matches that pitch. Keep a note of the ensemble’s chosen value.

Avoid a common mistake

Do not confuse a calibration change with a semitone transposition or an alternate string tuning. Also avoid unsupported claims that one reference frequency guarantees health, relaxation, or superior musical quality. The practical tuning question is whether musicians share a suitable, consistent reference.
